Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is an upcoming adventure game based on the A Song of Ice and Fire book and television series, with a planned release starting in late 2014 for Microsoft WindowsOS XPlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game is being developed by Telltale Games in partnership with George R. R. Martin's personal assistant Ty Corey Franck, who works as the "story consultant". The game will follow a similar episodic format that Telltalle has used for its titles The Walking DeadThe Wolf Among Us and the upcoming Tales from the Borderlands, where player choices and actions will have significant effects on later story elements[citation needed].

Gameplay

Game of Thrones is a point-and-click adventure game similar to Telltale's other games, to be released as a number of episodes. The player will be able to move their player-character around the world's environment, interacting with objects and initiating conversation trees with non-player characters. Choices made by the player will have impact on later story elements in future episodes[citation needed].

Development

After the previous games set in his narrative received overwhelmingly negative or mediocre critical response, George R. R. Martin opined that he wanted "a Game of Thrones game to be made by a studio that knows how to create a thrilling and interesting story".[1] Telltale Games has found critical success in several licensed adventure games, including The Walking Dead episodic video game series. The Game of Thrones game arose from internal discussions within Telltale of what other popular franchises they would write games around, with much support given for Game of Thrones, considering it emotionally equivalent to their The Walking Dead game. They approached HBO with the concept, and after a year of negotiations, were able to secure the license.[2]
Telltale announced the Game of Thrones title along with Tales From the Borderlands at the 2013 Spike VGX video game awards program in December. George R. R. Martin stated that his personal assistant, Ty Corey Franck, is working with Telltale Games on the game as the "story consultant".[1] According to Telltale's CEO Don Conners, the game will not be a prequel to the events of the TV series.[3] Conners stated that the established world and timeline of Game of Thrones is allowing them to explore these fixed stories more in-depth to appeal to players.[3]
